City of Lakewood Ray Evans Memorial Fishing Day

  • American Lake Park 9222 Veterans Drive Southwest Lakewood, WA, 98498 United States (map)

Bring the kids to the beach at American Lake Park and participate in the city's annual fishing event. Fishing poles provided.

The event was named "The Ray Evans Memorial Fishing Event for Kids" in honor of WWII war hero and longtime Trout Unlimited member Ray Evans. During WWII, Ray was awarded the Bronze Star while serving in the US Coast Guard.

Commander Ray Evans was one of only six US Coast Guard recipients of the Navy Cross during WWII. During the battle at Guadalcanal, Ray and his shipmate, Doug Munro piloted landing craft vessels to transport a battalion of marines on shore. The marines immediately came under heavy fire so Ray and Doug were ordered to go back to the beach and evacuate the marines. Doug Munro was killed during the evacuation and remains the only USCG recipient of the Medal of Honor. Ray Evans received the Navy Cross. Ray was later given a rare field promotion by ADM Halsey on his flagship in Noumea, New Caledonia.

Ray and his wife Dottie have been longtime Trout Unlimited members and were mainly known for generously donating their time to rig the rods & reels for this kid’s fishing event. They used to rig over 500 rods & reels for our event. Ray never spoke of his heroic actions during WWII as was the case of many servicemen from his era, “The Greatest Generation”.

Ray passed away in June 2013 and was laid to rest at Mountain View cemetery with full military honors.

Cost in the past has been $10 per participant and includes: a tee shirt, rod & reel and up to 2 fish that they catch. Space is often limited and participants must pre-register to receive their tee shirt. In the past, when open, registration can be done at Lakewood City Hall or online at or by phone with a credit card at 253-983-2887.
